In the 18 th century whalers placed a barrel on Floreana Island in the Galapagos where they left letters for home in the hope that they would be collected by other visiting ships and eventually find their way to their destination. This tradition has continued although happily not by whalers, and now visitors leave postcards and wait to see how long it takes the cards to arrive. It’s probably the same system the post office use for second class mail today!
