On Santa Fé Island in the Galapagos sea lions lie around on the beach with their young totally ignoring any visitors wandering past. The rule is not to go within two metres of the animals but this is often difficult especially with the youngsters who are naturally curious. Sea lions are the colour of old leather when dry but turn glossy black when wet. Although ungainly on land once in the water they are amazing swimmers and to have one flash by when snorkelling is a wonderful experience.
